Focus on Where You Want to Go
I knew the moment it was going to happen. It was a split second flash, but my fate was settled.
Sure enough, a brief moment later I was airborne. A slow motion flight up and up. Followed by a fast plummet to the unforgiving ground.
My friends rushed over. We checked the bike, no damage there. Besides being caked in mud and a bit of blood running down my forearm, I was fine.
Jason looked at me.
For a beginner, you were doing great. You were right on her wheel the whole time.
We’d been tearing down the single track in Telluride, the steepest, most fun mountain biking I’d ever experienced.
“You know what went wrong, don’t you?” he asked.
“Yeah,” I replied.
“You stopped looking at where you wanted to go. Instead you focused on what you wanted to avoid. And you headed straight to it,” he said.
Scared, wobbling on the edge of the unknown?
Look through the turn. Stay focused on where you want to go.
Feeling like a fraud? Worried you’re not good enough?
Let go of old habits. Stay focused on where you want to go.
Obstacles, challenges, heartbreak blocking your path?
Find a way through the pain. Stay focused on where you want to go.
We got back on our bikes, there was a lot left to explore.
He looked at me, I smiled. I was focused on where I wanted to go.
“You look pretty legit,” he said.“You’ve got dirt in your teeth.”
