We build our existence around comfort. Look for the easy answer. Keep an eye out for the path of least resistance.
And when we get it – when we’re surrounded by ease and abundance, sitting isolated in our nest of predictability – we feel a desperate desire to escape. We’re so unbelievably, wonderfully, horribly, perfectly comfortable that we become miserable.
The goal of life isn’t easy. We’re meant to be challenged and pushed to our limits. It’s what keeps us growing. Thriving. Connecting. And living.
As Sebastian Junger writes in Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging,
“Humans don’t mind hardship, in fact they thrive on it; what they mind is not feeling necessary. Modern society has perfected the art of making people not feel necessary.
It’s time for that to end.”
